لاقت الدراسات الأولى التي اهتمت بدراسة اضطرابات فهم الجمل صدى كبيرا لدى الباحثين عندما توّصلت إلى إمكانية حدوث اضطرابات على مستوى فهم الجمل عند إصابة عصبية في ضل فهم سليم للكلمات المعزولة، ويرجع انشغال الباحثين في ميدان الحبسة وخارجها بهذه النتائج لكونها تدعم فكرة وجود نظام تركيبي خاص بالسلامة النحوية ومستقل عن الدلالة. ولكن على الرغم من هذا الاهتمام فإن التنظيرات الحديثة الخاصة بمعالجة الجمل لدى مصابين بالحبسة التي نشرت في أبرز المجلات المعرفية لم تفلح في دعم أو رفض النماذج الحديثة الخاصة بمعالجة الجمل لدى الأشخاص العاديين.
