Abstract

The project of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, decided upon by the Union of Arab Scientific Academies, is not similar to other cultural projects such as scientific encyclopedias or biographical dictionaries. It cannot be compared to any dictionary or encyclopedia work. This project possesses unique characteristics that are uncommon in collective endeavors, notably:

Firstly, the necessity to rely on a vast amount of data, comprising modern texts that have reached us, which are voluminous to an extraordinary extent.

Secondly, the project requires sophisticated and effective means for systematic comprehensive navigation through this enormous number of texts across different eras and fields.

Thirdly, it demands a highly precise scientific methodology for semantic and linguistic comparison of words in their usage by speakers across various periods and specific domains, to uncover the intended meanings throughout the evolution of these terms.
